Web MarketingSo, you just had a web site made but no one is calling and you're not making any sales. You know that old quote from the movie Field of Dreams, “If you build it and he will come,” well it’s not quite the case. In fact it very much is the opposite when it comes to web sites.

Building a website is just one step in the process of promoting your business online.

How to Drive Relevant Traffic to My Site

There are several ways to drive traffic to your site and here is just a quick list of a few tips that you should follow in order to get that traffic.

Search Engine Optimise Your Site

This is a very important step in getting traffic to your site. Making sure that your site is can be crawled by search engines will ensure that it will be index in to their databases and then added to the search results. There are several steps and techniques that should be used in order to achieve a well search engine optimised site. Please refer to the other articles on this site for more hints and tips on search engine optimisation.

Create a Google XML Sitemap

Google provide a fantastic service for submitting sites to their search engine. Google Webmaster Tools allows a site administrator the ability to submit an XML based list of pages to Google. Google in turn will crawl and index all of these pages to its search results database applying all of its Page Rank rules. This is a great way to make sure all of your pages are internally linked properly.

If you use Joomla then a great component for automatically creating an XML site map is Joomap. It's quick and easy to install and submits a correctly formatted XML site map for submission to Google.

Alternatively you can use the services of a third part site such as XML Sitemaps. This is a fantastic site, it creates all of the files that you need to create site maps not only for submission to Google but also for your web users. It does a web powered spider crawl across your site indexing all of the pages that it can access in your site.

Making sure that all of your pages on your site are crawled also increases the amount of internal links in your site.

Get Inbound Links

Getting inbound links from other sites to yours not only increased exposure of your website to your own but it also shows search engines that you really do exist. The more inbound links that you have to your site the more importance other search engines see towards your site. Eventually you will start to creep higher in the search engine results, but be warned, only relevant links to your site are seen as good.Getting hundreds of links ot your site from all over the internet may have a good effect at first but over time you will be filtered down in the results.
